I had the privilege or working at Frank Hurt Secondary school from 2005 until 2020. I was surrounded by supportive staff in all areas of the school. I want to thank my students for all the amazing lessons that they have taught me. Through being their teacher, I was able to define and refine my teaching skills and who I am as a dancer today.

I started off at Frank Hurt teaching a variety of dance genres. I think it is amusing that I went in as a ballerina and came out as a breakdancer. At the end there, I also learned some pretty sweet Bhangra dances too.

The best thing about Frank Hurt is the vibe. The community of dancers there are so supportive. They are like a family. I defined my three most important teacher rules at Frank Hurt from watching the break class interact and grow. I shared these rules with the rest of my classes at Frank Hurt and continue to start new class with these rules:
  1. Greet everyone
  2. Acknowledge awesomeness
  3. Support each other

Back to the vibe. These kids can freestyle. This was not always the case. I started by having dance parties on Fridays at the end of each class. That is where I turn the lights out, play one song, and everyone just has to dance for three minutes. These grew into party lights and Freestyle Fridays with full on battles. Alumni always popped in for Freestyle Fridays and that just made the vibe even hyper. Fridays were no doubt my favourite days of the week because of this.

I also love how all of the Surrey schools support each other at competitions and battles. I consider some students from other Surrey schools part of our Frank Hurt family as well. Crews grew from our school and formed with members of other schools. Our community expanded, inspiring more people to keep on dancing and moving. The more dance friends you have the better. The more opportunities to dance and the more chances you have of continuing to dance as you grow older.

Now, that I have left Frank Hurt and I am on a new teaching adventure, I miss my students. However, I will always be J Fresh and they will always be my Killa Beez. Once a Killa Bee, always a Killa Bee.
